William Knuttel 2014 Windsor Oaks Vineyard Pinot Noir

Vineyard

Windsor Oaks Vineyard, which is nestled in the heart of the Russian River Valley appellation.

Winemaking

The 2014 vintage was dry and temperate from start to finish for Pinot Noir, ideal for uniform ripening of the miniscule crops. The various clones from Paradise Vineyard were separately fermented in small bins.  Cool fruit from a night pick was de-stemmed, then cold soaked for five days prior to inoculation with the Burgundian yeast RC-212. Punchdowns were increased during the peak of fermentation to extract the skin tannins, but were reduced toward the end of fermentation to avoid the more aggressive seed tannins. The lots were pressed off at dryness, and only the free run portions were kept for possible incorporation into this single vineyard wine.  Aging was predominantly in Francois Freres barrels, about 50% new. The final blend was a strict barrel selection that included Dijon 667, 777 and 115, and a small amount of Pommard selection.

Tasting Notes

ABOUT THE LABEL ART:

Designer Jeffrey Caldewey captured William Knuttel’s kin-etic wine world with Etienne-Jules Marey’s 1890 “chrono-photograph,” in which multiple exposures are superimposed to show the complete motion of “le coup d’epee.” The image meta-phorically highlights the balance, finesse, power and poise valued by the wine-maker.

This intensely scented Pinot Noir features aromas of spiced cherries, pomegranate, black plum, and cinnamon.  Fresh fruit bursts on the palate, adding notes of earth, blackberries and vanilla. The balance is seamless from entry to finish and invites a host of food pairings, from vegetable dishes to roasted meats to spicier fare.
